The Essential Oil That'll Help Protect Your Hummingbird Feeders From Pests

Hummingbirds are one type of bird that people are typically glad to see in their garden and yard. They are great pollinators, so they can be a big help for gardeners. In fact, according to the Pollinator Project, there are a number of plants that can only be pollinated by hummingbirds. In addition to their role in helping propagate flowering plants, hummingbirds are also fascinating to watch, as they zip between plants and trees. As a result, many people go out of their way to attract them by growing plants that attract hummingbirds or placing hummingbird feeders around the yard.

While these flowering plants and feeders do indeed draw in these tiny avians, they also attract a number of pests and rodents. Some of these unwanted visitors, such as ants, may taint the nectar to prevent the hummingbirds from utilizing the feeders. Others, such as bees and wasps, pose an even greater threat, as they are able to sting hummingbirds just as they sting humans or other animals they view as a threat.

This can present quite a conundrum for backyard bird enthusiasts and gardeners. While they need to limit or eliminate the pests that are drawn to the feeder, they have to do so in a way that is safe for hummingbirds. This typically means no chemical pesticides, as these products have been shown to be dangerous to hummingbirds and typically will keep them from frequenting feeders. However, there are natural solutions. Peppermint is the essential oil that'll help protect your hummingbird feeders from pests.

Peppermint oil helps keep pests away

When it comes to natural pest remedies, essential oils have become the preferred substance for many gardeners, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts. While several essential oils can serve this purpose, peppermint oil is generally considered one of the most effective. Peppermint oil repels stink bugs, ants, wasps, bees, and a variety of other insects and rodents without hazardous chemical residue.

Peppermint oil can be applied in a few different ways. One of the most common is to utilize it as a spray. To make a peppermint oil pest control spray, mix Handcraft Blends Peppermint Essential Oil (or similar product) with water and dish soap. A typical recipe would be 2 tablespoons of dish soap, 2 teaspoons of peppermint oil, and 1 gallon of hot water. Once mixed, transfer the concoction to a spray bottle. Spray around the base of the feeder stands, perimeter of the yard, base of buildings and trees, and anywhere else ants may enter.

Another method is to soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them at the base of the feeder stand or the trunk of trees and bushes. Keep in mind, the effectiveness of the peppermint oil is temporary. So, it should be reapplied at least once per week and after any rainfall.
