Take A Break From Your Busy Life With The Relaxing 'Self-Cation' Travel Trend

In the fast-paced world we live in, taking time to recharge has become more essential than ever. Sometimes, you just don't want to go on an adventurous holiday around the world, because you're already so burnt out. You're not alone.

Travel expert Gabe Saglie tells KTLA 5 that "self-cations", or "me-time getaways" are on the rise. These are solo vacations dedicated to self-care, reflection, and relaxation — and they are quickly becoming a popular trend amongst travelers seeking to escape the demands of daily life. Whether it's for a weekend or an extended retreat, a self-cation offers a restorative experience designed to focus on your well-being, away from the constant pressures of work, technology, and even relationships.

For fans of the outdoors, a self-cation presents the perfect opportunity to embrace the calming power of the wilderness. Research consistently shows that spending time in nature benefits our mental well-being. Specifically, a 2015 study published in Landscape and Urban Planning showed that time in nature decreases anxiety and improves mood. This could be because being outdoors reduces the amount of time we spend thinking negatively about ourselves, according to another research journal from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences printed that same year. These benefits are still pronounced when you're alone in nature — which is what self-cationing is all about. So, whether you're hiking through dense forests, listening to waves crash along a remote shoreline, or camping under the stars, reconnecting with yourself offers an experience of true relaxation and renewal.

Consider wellness stays in nature

If you're looking for a hassle-free way to enjoy a self-cation outdoors, wellness retreats nestled in nature might be the perfect solution. These resorts incorporate outdoor elements into their offerings, such as yoga on a mountain plateau, guided hikes through scenic landscapes, forest massages, and meditative walks. There are packages for individuals for many of these retreats so you can still enjoy all your me-time, without worrying about organizing or planning. Plus, many of these resorts and accommodations offer great meal services with a focus on wholesome, nutritious foods. A lot are even switching away from alcohol, encouraging sober travel. Staying sober can sharpen your mind, helping you more deeply connect with nature and yourself.

Alternatively, if you'd like more freedom with your activities, eco-friendly lodges or glamping spots might be a great option for a getaway. These types of accommodations blend luxury with the great outdoors, giving you the chance to relax, with minimal logistics to handle. Simply book a stay, check in and... do nothing whatsoever. Sometimes, what we need most is the chance to unwind completely, free from schedules and any responsibilities.

If you're short on time or can't venture far, opt for a day visit to an outdoor spa or a hot spring. As is the way in many countries in northern Europe, hydrotherapies such as saunas, thermal baths, and hot springs endow the body and mind many rejuvenating benefits.

Create your own perfect self-cation

One of the best aspects of a self-cation is that you choose your own adventure. Whether you're drawn to the rugged cliffs of the coast, the crisp mountain air of a backcountry campsite, or the peaceful stillness of a forest trail, your destination should align with your idea of relaxation. While wellness retreats appeal to some, others may prefer a more low-key experience — like a solo portage trip through serene lakes or a hike through the wilderness. For a more mindful experience, try forest bathing. This popular Japanese wellness trend, known as shinrin-yoku, involves immersing oneself in the wilderness and allowing nature to engage all your senses. According to a 2009 study in Environmental Health and Preventive Medicine, researchers found that by fully embracing the sights, sounds, and even smells of a forest, people can experience profound mental clarity and relaxation.

There are no set rules to self-cations. You have the power to choose what to do in each passing moment. If your goal is to unplug, turn off your phone and laptop for the duration of your holiday. Looking for a creative reset? Pack your journal, sketchbook or camera. Want to indulge in self-care? Do your own yoga on a mountain peak or meditate beside a flowing river. You have the freedom to do anything you want.

When you're on a self-cation, there's no pressure to follow a schedule to meet anyone's expectations — even your own. So, ditch the worries about appearance or itineraries and focus instead on comfort and presence. Pack your cozy clothes, favorite snacks, your essential oils and immerse yourself in nature's serenity — your only task is to rest and recharge.
