Keep Your Garden Hose Organized With This Clever Storage Hack

If you have experience with gardening and lawn care, then you probably already know the garden watering mistakes to avoid and how often you should be watering your yard every week. However, even if you are now a pro at watering and have figured out the perfect schedule, something that still may be bothering you is hose storage. This can be an issue because, if you are watering a lot, a garden hose can easily get tangled up or left out which can cause an eyesore on your lawn. Plus, hose storage options that are available at most garden centers are often either ugly, expensive, difficult to use (looking at you, hose reel), or simply cheap and low quality.

Luckily, there's an easy way to make an inexpensive, long-lasting, and aesthetically pleasing hose holder, and all you need is a bucket. The best thing about this hack is that it allows you to choose the type of bucket that would best go with your yard and garden — and you can choose from a wide range of options, from a galvanized steel tub to a vintage enamel bucket or even a wooden barrel. This means you will have plenty of room to get creative and choose something that fits in well with your yard decor. Plus, once you have your bucket, all you need to do is attach it to your house.

How to make a hose holder from a bucket

To make a bucket into a convenient hose storage unit, the idea is to turn the bucket sideways and then attach the bottom to the side of your house near where your home's hose hookup is located. This will then make a barrel that a hose can be easily wrapped around or slung over for off-the-ground storage. To do this, you will need a drill and at least four screws (depending on the size of your bucket). If your chosen bucket or barrel is made of wood, then you can easily just drill a few pilot holes and then screw the bucket into the wall; however, if your bucket is metal, it is a little more complicated.

Because drill bits tend to slide around when they touch metal, it's a good idea to make a little indentation at each hole site before you start drilling. You can do this by using a center punch and hammer to create a small dimple in the metal so that your drill has a place to rest and won't slide around. Once this is done, you can go ahead and drill your holes. Then, using the drill, screw the bucket into the wall — and you are good to go!

What if you don't want to drill the bucket into your home?

We understand why you may not want to drill directly into the siding of your house and may be looking for another option. If your hose hookup is in a location that allows it, you could instead choose to attach your bucket to the side of your shed, garage, or even a wooden fence. However, if none of those will work in your yard, then you can still attach the bucket to a wooden post instead of directly to the side of your house.

To do this, you will first need to get a wooden post and cut it to your desired height. Remember that about a foot and a half to two feet of wood will need to be in the ground, so you should cut your piece of wood a little taller than you would like the post to end up being. Next, you will need to dig a hole and put some gravel in the bottom of it. The gravel will help with drainage and also prevent the wooden post from holding water and rotting. Next, insert your post and fill the rest of the hole up with either gravel, soil, or concrete. From there, you are ready to attach your bucket and can screw the bucket onto the post to create your hose holder.
