The Unexpected Way A Shower Curtain Can Spruce Up Your Garden

For many, gardens are safe havens. They are a place to be at peace and decorate how you want, planting your favorite flowers, adding some nice patio furniture, and filling the empty spaces with cute decorations. However, when your garden is small, you're often limited in what you can do.

There are so many ways you can use items around your home to spruce up your garden for a low cost, including repurposing old tires and buying a few Dollar Tree solar lights. If you want another way to make your yard stand out that doesn't command a fortune and works in a small space, you're in luck. With only a shower curtain and a staple gun, you're set to completely change how the outside of your home looks.

In just a few hours, depending on the shower curtain you choose, you can change up the landscape in your yard, add a fun accent wall, or make your small garden look bigger and feel more like a vacation than your own backyard. You'll be surprised by how much a shower curtain can spruce up a space.

Using your shower curtain to change your garden.

The process is rather simple. All you need is a shower curtain with a high-quality image on it, a fence or wall, and a staple or upholstery gun.  Polyester curtains are considered the best type to use, as they are more durable, waterproof, and have a sturdier look than if made with plastic. You may want to start by using push pins when hanging up your curtain. This is because they don't always sit in the way you might expect. Using push pins will help you get it in just the right spot before you secure it permanently.

This method works best with a wooden fence or wall. However, though it takes a bit more effort, you can get the same results on a metal one as well. If it's not quite time to replace your fence, but the worn look is bringing down your garden, a shower curtain helps to hide some of the most unattractive spaces.

Once you're satisfied with the placement, use your staple gun to hold the shower curtain in place against the wood. If you have a metal fence that doesn't make for easy stapling, it's harder to hang up your decoration but not impossible. Clear zip ties through the eyelets and a few holes made on the sides and bottoms may help.

How to make your shower curtain decoration more personal

While that covers the basic premise of what you have to do to hang your fence, you can always add some extra touches. As TikTok user @gardeningwithmel, aka Mel, shows in her video, hemming your shower curtain is useful when the original isn't the exact size you need. This helps the image fit better and blend into your yard more seamlessly. She likes to leave a little space on the bottom so she can edge the grass during lawn maintenance.

Do you want to have your decoration draw the eye even more? Consider adding solar lights. In Mel's video, she sticks a light in front of the curtain so it's illuminated at night. However, you can also place some string lights behind the material to brighten certain spots. For example, a shower curtain with candles or lamps would look very neat when solar lights bleed through in those areas.

As a fun note, there are products made for this, too. Halloween backdrops are a good example of other options to hang outside on your fence, but they are often a bit more dramatic in their themes and not quite as durable. But it would make a good option around the holiday or if you want a more spooky feel in your backyard.
