Try This Dollar Tree Lighting Hack To Add Some Style To Your Yard

There are so many ways to light up your garden at night. From fairy lights to hanging planters with a simple DIY Dollar Tree hack. If you want something that looks just as nice but sits on the ground, there's another hack for you. Coincidentally, this hack also features items found at Dollar Tree. The tip comes from a TikTok account called @dollartree.hacks, and it offers a simple and cheap way to light up your yard while still looking nice. Outdoor lighting, even these low-cost options, help to add serious value to your home by making the yard look nicer and safer.

This hack also has the benefit of being wire-free. By using solar lights found at Dollar Tree, you get several hours of light at night without costing you anything in electricity, nor do you have to worry about hiding or tripping over wires around your yard. Despite their low cost, the lights last a fairly long time, and light up the area while still looking elegant.

How to make these outdoor lights

You only need four items to get started on this hack, all of which you can find at the Dollar Tree, or potentially in your own home. These items are:

  • Solar stake lights (1-3 per pot depending on your preferences)
  • Plant pot (as many as you want, any color, style, and shape)
  • Rocks or stones (Enough to fill up every pot)
  • Foam square (Half a square per pot, able to fit at the bottom of the pot)

All you need to do is get your pots and glue foam squares to the bottom. Foam circles or smaller squares than what is shown in the video is fine. It just needs to be tall enough to support the lights when they're staked in, and help elevate the lights over the edge of the pot so they can be seen. The bigger the foam, the less rocks you need to fill up the rest of the pot, similar to how you can put plastic bottles in the bottom of your flower pot to use less soil when actually putting plants in the planters.

Once the glue is dry, stake in the lights. Place the number you want in each pot and adjust their height and position until you're satisfied. Then, cover the foam and most of the pot with rocks or stones of your choice. River stones, glass pebbles, or even small rocks around your yard are all acceptable options, depending on your preferences.

Personalize your lights with some color

One nice thing about this hack is that it's relatively easy to adjust to suit your tastes. While you can use any plastic planter you find at Dollar Tree, you aren't limited to those. If you have extra planters lying around, just grab any of them to use. Consider also changing out the colors of your pots and lights. Adding gel sheets to your solar lamps allows you to set different mood lighting, and it's easy to change out the colors whenever you want, such as during holidays or themed parties.

Changing the color of the plastic pot and rocks are also options. Most start off black, brown, or green, but with a little spray paint, you can opt for bolder and brighter colors to match your yard better or to stand out. Or, you can find a shade of green similar to your plants nearby and spray paint the pots the same color so they blend in better during the day. While these two options do increase the cost a little, they are still budget-friendly.

Additionally, they are something you can do later on, if you want the lights now, but can't also afford the spray paint and gel sheets. If you're someone that likes to change up decorations regularly, you can start with the standard light and pot design, and then later add fun colors to change it up without having to buy or create a whole new lighting system.
